Researchers in Singapore have developed nanoparticles that diagnose and treat atherosclerosis by targeting plaques and delivering therapeutic agents directly. This innovative approach enhances real-time imaging and stabilizes plaques, promising less invasive and more effective treatment for heart disease.

Atherosclerosis, characterized by plaque build-up in arteries, remains a leading cause of heart disease and stroke. This stealthy condition often progresses without symptoms until arteries are severely narrowed, making traditional diagnostic methods like angiography and stress tests inadequate.

To address this challenge, advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning enable personalized treatment strategies. Wearable technology and telemedicine facilitate continuous heart health monitoring, allowing for early detection of potential issues.

Furthermore, in a study published in the journal Small, researchers from Singapore have leveraged nanotechnology to enhance the diagnosis and treatment of atherosclerosis. The newly developed nanoparticles can identify atherosclerotic plaques and deliver therapeutic agents directly to inhibit disease progression.

These nanoparticles are designed to break down in the acidic environment of plaques, releasing gadolinium for real-time imaging and Simvastatin, an anti-inflammatory drug, to stabilize plaques and reduce cardiovascular event risks. This innovative approach promises a less invasive and more targeted treatment for atherosclerosis.
